So far, the trip has gone without a hitch (aside from a missed train, bus and boat). Friday was a great day in London. We took a bus tour around the city and we stopped at the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The cathedral reminded me a lot of St. Peter’s in Rome. There was a similar altar in the middle. At the tower, I saw the crown jewels, saw the torture chambers, saw a used chop block, the armoury, and where Anne Bolyn was beheaded. There’s a lot of tradition and history in England. The folks in London have a lot of pride in their heritage.
We met up with some of pastor’s friends for dinner and then went to Les Miserables. Wow, what a show! It’s my third time seeing it and it keeps getting better and better as I get older. Of course, Eponine’s solo was the best. Later that night, I was able to chat on skype with Sharon and Luke. I miss them and wish they were with me. Soon enough, we’ll all take a trip abroad. Today, another one of pastor’s friends (he’s like an evangelical celebrity where they all get in line to speak with him) drove us to Cambridge to show us the campus. It is an amazing campus. I could not imagine what it would be like to attend a school with so much tradition and academic pride. The school has a history that’s several hundred years old. It was pretty impressive.
I think Pastor Dickie has gotten a lot accomplished here. He’s worked out some arrangements with a friend to get help with his publishing company, Emmaus Road Publishing. He was also able to meet with Dr. Andrews and help get a book ready for publication. We’ve done a little business and a little pleasure. I’ve been able to stay on top of stuff at work and thankfully I’m not missing out on much.
It’s funny, in London there was a language barrier for me. I felt like I was speaking Swahili. I told one waitress to “close out the ticket” and she looked at me as if I slapped her mother. Anyways, all is well. I’m actually in the air en route to Africa (with Sharon to post later). It’s been a long, 12 hour flight, and I’m sitting in the middle. Ouch! But it’s sunny out and I’m looking forward to seeing this little continent. I’ve always had a curiosity about Africa. There’s just a mystique about it that I can’t put my finger on.
