Swartz Creek woman shatters road race record

GENESEE COUNTY
THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITION
Sunday, March 30, 2008 Journal Sports Writer

Sharon Thompson of Swartz Creek shattered the record for the fastest five-kilometer time by a Flint-area woman in a local road race Saturday, finishing the Flushing Township 5K with a time of 16:14.

The former Sharon Dickie of Grand Blanc broke her own record of 16:42 set when she took first overall in the Avalon Hospice 5K in Flushing on Oct. 16, 2004. The only other recorded sub-17 5K by an area woman in a local race was a 16:58 by Flint's Carrie Gould in the Flushing Evening 5K on June 9, 1999.

Thompson, 28, was fourth overall in a strong field in which the first eight runners broke 17 minutes. The former University of Tennessee All-American ran at a pace of 5:14 per mile.

Mike Scannell, 45, of Grand Blanc ran the second-fastest time in the race's 16-year history, posting a time of 15:44 for an average pace of 5:04. Steven Lawrence set the race record of 15:31 in 1998. Scannell finished 15 seconds ahead of Durand High sophomore David Madrigal, who made All-State in the state Division 3 cross country meet in the fall.

The top five runners recorded times that would have won the race the last six years. The wind wasn't nearly as strong as it typically is for this event.

Jason Jaloszynski, 30, of Clio ran alone to win the half marathon in 1 hour, 16 minutes and 19 seconds. Ben Vanhoose of Greenville was a distant second in 1:21:09.

Eliza Nyblad, 20, of Grand Rapids was the women's winner and 13th overall out of 149 finishers in 1:29:42. Nyblad runs for Cornerstone University, as does second-place Janelle Lindman (1:31:24) and third-place Nicki Erler (1:32:08).

Johnny Olsey of Clio won the 5K walk in 29:12. Women's winner Becky Benjamin of Swartz Creek was second overall in 31:08.

Hey Sharon, way to go! My favorite part of the story was when they said you beat Carrie Gould's old record! HA! HA! There is something to be said for all your hard work with not getting much sleep and being an attentive mother to Luke! Congratulations! Love all the Q's

Sharon. Congrats! You are awesome! I am slightly annoyed that they had to bring up Carrie Gould in your story...at least it was to say that you beat her:) Michael wonders what I have been doing! Love you, Randi
